Success story #8: Out reach Health services
AEF is working closely with West End Medical Solutions (WEMS) to come
up with an innovative way of reaching the communities with quality health care services. Recognizing that the challenges communities
face in getting access doctors, laboratory
services and
quality medication, AEF has a Franchise based concept where WEMS will work with selected practitioners in rural settings to
set up quality services but with the agreement that the Franchisees offer specified support to the village based health point/s
within their vicinity including out reach services. WEMS plans to run mobile unit and health camps within their network catchment
areas.Good progress has been made in establishing the Health Franchise Network. As demonstrated below, the network will consist
of a Medical Center in Machakos from where a team of Doctors will provide support and guidance to the eight satellite clinics.
The satellite clinics are, by agreement, required to extent out reach services and support to the Village based Health posts.
WEMS Doctors provide technical back stopping to the Franchisees. The Doctors are supported by a central laboratory service
and pharmacy. These central units will offer extended services to the satellites. The first satellite clinic, Wamunyu is already
operating and the pictures below demonstrate the progress made in setting up the medical center. In the pictures below two
of the Doctors, Dr Mutinda (centre) and Kilonzo (left), who have been leading the establishment of the Medical center (1),
guide visitors (Mr Tom MacManus and Philip –AEF Co-Founder) through the center during the last phase of construction,
March 2008. Below is the new look of the WEMS Medical Center, Machakos. It opened its doorsfor
service delivery on 05/05/2008. The center opened officially on May 12th 2008 and the latest statistics show a steady increase
in the number of services provided. Effort is now directed towards setting a state of the Art laboratory, pharmacy and a mobile
unit. AEF, through the WEMS network, plans to promote preventive dentistry. In preparation WEMS has brought a dentist into
their team and a Dr E. Clemons (a Friend of AEF) of North Carolina has donated two dental chairs to AEF ready to ship to Kenya
once the funds for shipment are secured.

Next
steps:
The joint force will continue institutional
development and setting up of the outreach and preventive services. Once established the network will be a powerful instrument
for advancing global health program.
AEF invites Global health initiatives to take advantage of this net work as a channel for extending services
to underserved communities. AEF and WEMS will welcome building consortium with interested partners to bid for relevant support.
Together we can reach those in dire need for health care.
